Dunninger's Complete Encyclopedia of Magic

Dunninger's Complete Encyclopedia of Magic- Image Over Text PDF with bookmarks

This astounding compendium of magic was originally published in the early 20th Century and actually doesn’t have so much to do with Joseph Dunninger the famous magician and mentalist. It’s really a collection of secrets and pseudo-secrets. Even if you filter out the ridiculous and downright silly (which is still a lot of fun to read), you will find some really cool secrets and probably have to smile as you go along, too.

My Magic Life by David Devant

David Devant was a consummate magical entertainer, and we are very privileged to have his excellent autobiography. In it, you will get to study the path one of magic’s greatest exponents travelled from his early interest in magic through his struggles as he ascended to the very pinnacle of our art. In addition to the autobiography, he includes a number of histories and thoughts on magic, as well as the scripts to a number of his theatrical pieces. Anyone who has read Our Magic will know how fantastic Mr. Devant is at crafting a piece of magic and will find much to inspire them in these pages.

Memoirs of Robert Houdin

One of histories great autobiographies, Jean Eugene Robert Houdin who was called the father of Modern Magic, discarding flowing robes, and in it's place appearing in Evening Dress of the time period. With a scientific mind he created many new Magic feats, and on the ancient ones he so improved them as to appear new Magic feats, many of these Magic effects are performed by Magicians to this day. A genius, his many talents extended to remarkable scientific and mechanical experiments, stating with Automata, Clock Making, an early Electrician, an Ambassador for France, etc. A fledging young Ehrich Weiss so admired Robert Houdin that he added an "I" and changed his name to Houdini. A fascinating book that started many an aspiring youngster to the ranks of full time professional Magician!

Secrets of Conjuring & Magic

dl0-secretsofconjuring-det_502_detail

Jean Eugène Robert-Houdin (1805-71) is often called the father of modern conjuring. His name was later adopted by magician and escape artist Harry Houdini, whose highly sceptical exposé of Victorian spiritualism is also published in this series. The best-known magician of his
time, Robert-Houdin toured France, England and Germany, performed for Queen Victoria, and was sent to French Algeria by Napoleon III to demonstrate the perceived superiority of French magic to the local shamans. This book, originally published in 1868, is devoted primarily to coin and card tricks, but Robert-Houdin also describes many other magical tricks and includes a history of conjuring. In 1877 the book appeared in this English translation by Louis Hoffmann (1839-1919). Hoffmann (real name Angelo John Lewis, a barrister) had published his own guide to magic in 1876, and both books caused controversy for revealing the secrets of stage magicians in such unprecedented detail.

The Discoverie of Witchcraft by Reginald Scot

Discoverie of Witchcraft - magic

Reginald Scot published The Discoverie of Witchcraft in 1584. Scot believed that the prosecution of those accused of witchcraft was irrational, so his aim was to show that witches did not exist, by exposing how feats of magic were performed.
You won't be adding any of the tricks in this book to your repertoire, but the book makes for a great read for anyone interested in the very early days of the publication of magic tricks. Even though the book was written over five-hundred years ago, it gives an interesting glimpse into the history of the magic that we performed today.

Magic in Mind by Joshua Jay

A note from Joshua Jay: What if I told you that today we are releasing a book with contributions from Derren Brown, Teller, and Juan Tamariz? How about if the book also included contributions from John Carney, Darwin Ortiz, Tommy Wonder, Pit Hartling, Rene Lavand, Tom Stone, and nearly thirty other magic luminaries?
And what if I told you that this collection was entirely free?
I have spent the last three years working on Magic in Mind, which is my gift to all magicians, young and old, who care deeply about magic. I set out to assemble some of the most important, influential, and helpful essays on magic ever written, and make them available to all serious students of magic for free. Coming in at over 500 pages, Magic in Mind is finally ready.
I am overwhelmed by the generosity of nearly thirty of my heroes, who kindly consented for me to publish or republish their words. Some essays the serious student will be familiar with, from Houdin to Fitzkee to Maven. Others are more arcane, but no less important. For example, I was able to get permission from the Tommy Wonder estate, and to have Juan Tamariz’s blessing to publish his essay on “illusionism” for the first time in English. I feel very lucky to have worked on this project, and I hope that magicians who read Magic in Mind will find the material as inspiring as I do.
